Your debts can be secured or unsecured. Secured debts usually are tied to an asset, like your car for a car loan, or your house for a mortgage. If you stop making payments, lenders can repossess your car or foreclose on your house. Unsecured debts are not tied to any asset, and include most credit card debt, bills for medical care, signature loans, and debts for other types of services.

Most automobile financing agreements allow a creditor to repossess your car any time youre in default. No notice is required. If your car is repossessed, you may have to pay the balance due on the loan, as well as towing and storage costs, to get it back. If you cant do this, the creditor may sell the car. If you see default approaching, you may be better off selling the car yourself and paying off the debt: Youll avoid the added costs of repossession and a negative entry on your credit report.

If you fall behind on your mortgage, contact your lender immediately to avoid foreclosure. Most lenders are willing to work with you if they believe youre acting in good faith and the situation is temporary. Some lenders may reduce or suspend your payments for a short time. When you resume regular payments, though, you may have to pay an additional amount toward the past due total. Other lenders may agree to change the terms of the mortgage by extending the repayment period to reduce the monthly debt. Ask whether additional fees would be assessed for these changes, and calculate how much they total in the long term.

If you and your lender cannot work out a plan, contact a housing counseling agency. Some agencies limit their counseling services to homeowners with FHA mortgages, but many offer free help to any homeowner whos having trouble making mortgage payments. Call the local office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development or the housing authority in your state, city, or county for help in finding a legitimate housing counseling agency near you.

Debt Consolidation

You may be able to lower your cost of credit by consolidating your debt through a second mortgage or a home equity line of credit. Remember that these loans require you to put up your home as collateral. If you cant make the payments or if your payments are late you could lose your home.

Whats more, the costs of consolidation loans can add up. In addition to interest on the loans, you may have to pay points, with one point equal to one percent of the amount you borrow. Still, these loans may provide certain tax advantages that are not available with other kinds of credit.

You have to look at your own financial situation to see if debt consolidation is right for you. Start off by getting a free credit report, make a budget, and check your finances to see the best way for you to get out of debt.

Its so easy to have those credit card balances sneak up on you, leaving you with a number of credit card and charge card balances high enough that youre only able to meet the monthly payments. On top of that, the interest rate is eating up the majority of your payment, so that it will take you years to pay off the balance owing. This is where you should consider credit card debt consolidation.

There are many people who do not own a home and dont have the luxury of being able to draw on an equity line of credit. This is where one should consider a balance transfer credit card. Many of these offers include a 0% twelve month introductory agreement.

When considering this method of reducing your monthly payments and paying down your debt, you do need to read the fine print. Some offers have no transfer fee, while others charge a flat fee of up to $50 for each transaction and then again there are those that charge 3% of the balance transferred.

The other thing needed to take into consideration, is what is the interest rate after the 12 month introductory time is up? This can also vary greatly, from 10% to 17.99%; however, there are many low interest credit cards that offer the balance transfer option.

If you do take this road to reduce your debt, you need the determination and discipline in paying a set amount each month and enough to make it worth your while. After all, this is your big chance in paying principle only without interest, thus accelerating your pay-off. But be warned, should you pay even one monthly payment late, there are penalties.

Credit card debt consolidation really isnt difficult. You can do all of your homework right here on the internet by comparing credit card offers from any number of financial institutions, available here online. If you take your time and do your due diligence, you could save yourself hundreds of dollars and pay down your debt considerably during the next twelve months.

Is debt consolidation really necessary? Perhaps. It certainly can seem like the easy way out of the problem of too many payments every month. When credit card and loan payments add up to $900 every month, why not pay all of these debts off and have a nice easy payment of say, $300? There are two reasons why it may be a bad idea.

Debt Consolidation Ignores Causes

Why do you have too much debt? Entirely unforeseeable circumstances? Thats rarely the whole cause. More often, when you have debt problems, it is because you buy too many things on credit. In other words, if you are looking for a consolidation loan it is probably due to bad financial habits.

What happens when you combine all those debts? You dont owe less. You may get a lower interest rate on average, but you still owe all the money, right? The consolidated debt is just easier to pay. It will be paid with one lower monthly payment stretched out over a longer period. Thats easier, but what else becomes easier now? Having more debt.

Isnt this exactly what many people do? They get $900 in various payments rolled into a loan with an easier $300 payment, and now they have excess income again. Time to buy some things on credit. Debt consolidation can be a way to postpone reckoning with the real problem bad financial habits. Unfortunately, when you put off dealing with the real causes of debt, the problem becomes much worse.

Debt Consolidation Is Expensive

Because of the lower interest rate, it seems like you are saving money with some consolidation loans. This isnt always true. Most often you are converting short-term debt into long term or longer-term debt. The problem here is that the more time you take to pay off the money you owe, the more you pay in interest.

Suppose you owed $6,000 on a credit card, with 18% annual interest. It would require a payment of $176.26 per month to pay it off in four years, and you would pay a total of $2460 in interest. Now suppose you rolled the debt into your 30-year mortgage on your home (many people do this), with only a 7% interest rate. This would add $39.92 to the payment. Thats easier than $176, and a much lower interest rate, so how much total interest will you pay over the years? $8371 more than the original debt!

Naturally there are debt consolidation loans shorter than 30 years, but you get the point. Even with a 15-year, 7% loan, which would costs $53.93 per month, you would pay at least 50% more in interest than with the 18% 4-year payoff. Converting your short-term debt into long term debt can cost you a lot more in interest.

The lesson? Try hard to make those payments and get rid of that debt sooner. Youll be glad you did. What if it is impossible to make those payments? This happens, but for a reason, so why not work at least as hard on changing your habits as you do on getting the best consolidation loan.

Students are often offered incentives to apply for credit cards, and some requirements are often waived. With the ability to buy something now and pay for it later can be hard to resist for students, and most are already struggling financially. The Public Interest Research Groups PIRG Student Credit Card Trap study in 1998 found that most students who received credit a credit card from campus tables had higher unpaid balances than other students who received the credit cards elsewhere and were more likely to roll over their balance from month to month.

Interest

Credit card companies have started to take an interest in educating credit card users because knowledgeable consumers are much less likely to be overwhelmed by debt, leaving them in a much better position to make their payments on-time and avoid getting bad credit and even bankruptcy. If your already overwhelmed by credit card debt, consider a debt consolidation loan, so instead of having a lot of high interest credit card bills due, you now will have one bill that is due once a month usually at a lower rate. Consolidating credit card debt can be as simple as contacting one of the many credit counseling agencies on the web. According to the Consumer Action, (a public interest organization) who does a survey once a year of over one hundred credit card companies, card holders can be hit with late fees of up to $39 and raised interest rates.

The increase in credit card debt is rising at an alarming rate. Some popular economists are predicting that the rise in credit debt is likely to continue. Many people do not realize how debilitating credit card debt can be to their lives.
